OpenAI Launches Two New Models
OpenAI has officially announced the launch of two new models, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, through its API on September 22, 2026. The models are also being gradually rolled out to ChatGPT including Work plans and Codex for eligible paid users.
GPT-6 Sol is designed for complex coding tasks and long-running agent workflows, while Luna is a lighter and faster model intended for general-purpose tasks.
Prices Cut by Half
The most notable aspect is the 50% reduction in API pricing compared with the previous GPT-5.6 models.
GPT-6 Sol costs approximately $2 per 1 million input tokens and $10 per 1 million output tokens, while Luna is significantly cheaper at $0.10 and $0.50, respectively.
OpenAI is also offering discounts of up to 90% on cached tokens, which could significantly reduce costs for applications that repeatedly use the same context.
Impact on Businesses Using AI
Both models build on the technology behind GPT-6 Astra, but have been optimized to be faster and more cost-effective for large-scale deployment.
They support different levels of reasoning effort, ranging from none to max, allowing developers to fine-tune the balance between speed and accuracy.
For businesses using AI for automation or large-scale chatbot operations, the price reduction could provide a strong incentive to expand their AI deployments.
The Competitive Landscape
The launch comes amid increasingly intense competition in the AI industry. It also coincides with a scheduled meeting of OpenAI executives and representatives from Anthropic at the United Nations Security Council to discuss AI and international security, alongside representatives from DeepSeek and Moonshot.
The development highlights how advanced AI models are becoming increasingly important not only from a business perspective, but also in terms of international policy and security.
